Humanity has the knowledge and the means to solve the climate crisis. But we have not yet reached a social tipping point – when a majority of people decide that climate inaction is no longer acceptable and will make their opinions felt at the ballot box. This project addresses two significant obstacles holding people back: apathy and a sense of isolation. By celebrating the work of Climate Laureates, this project will inspire people with the knowledge that their actions count. The Laureates’ impactful climate solutions will be integrated into the teachings of 100+ partner universities.
It can be overwhelming to read about the advance of the climate crisis. In learning this, it’s understandable for people to ask themselves what difference their individual actions can really make. And this is one of the most significant challenges facing climate action: people feeling saddened into inaction and apathy, because they believe they can’t change anything.
Research into climate psychology finds that negative feelings prevent us from making effective changes, and suggests that changing perspective is crucial. We need to reach a social tipping point, when people power will drive society forward.
The consequences of global warming are becoming harder to ignore, in every region of the world. Year by year, catastrophes increase – bushfires, floods, droughts and heatwaves are beginning to touch us all. But we can’t afford to wait until it’s too late, and the damage becomes largely irreversible. We need to accelerate social change until a majority of the population finds climate inaction unacceptable and makes their opinions heard.
Made up of 190 courageous changemakers from 74 countries, the global Right Livelihood network is an antidote to apathy and isolation. Each Laureate demonstrates the difference that an individual can make. Their inspiring stories have been widely covered by international media, showing a global audience that no one is truly powerless in defence of our planet.
This project will create a standalone platform of Climate Laureates, showcasing their exemplary leadership in climate action. The Laureates’ climate solutions will be promoted globally, on mainstream and social media. RLF will also create a new award for climate action, showing the world that impactful grassroots projects are possible.
The RLF’s Laureate programmes have a proven track-record to reach global media, influence decision-makers and change the minds of millions of people for the better. This project aims not only for social reach, but also for educational impact. RLF will co-develop a world-leading curriculum on climate rights, together with the world's largest academic programme for human rights. The Laureates’ solutions will be included, and the class taught by RLF’s 100+ partner universities.
Right Livelihood is a Swedish non-profit foundation that has fought for peace, justice and sustainability since 1980. Each year, the Right Livelihood Award (also called ‘Alternative Nobel Prize’) is presented to brave people in recognition of their visionary efforts for a better world.
Right Livelihood provides all Laureates long-term support to continue their work. The foundation ensures the Laureates’ work is recognised worldwide and builds powerful networks for change at global, regional and local levels.
With your support, the Foundation will launch the Climate Laureates programme. This project will counter the constant flow of bad news with examples of successful climate action, and has the potential to inspire masses of everyday people to become active in their communities. RLF will build on their significant reach in traditional and social media, and the winning Laureates’ innovations will receive global attention.
Additionally, over one hundred universities around the world will teach students about impactful grassroots climate action. As a donor, you will be invited to meet the Laureates personally and experience their work first-hand.
Social tipping points for strong climate action start to kick off. People across the world will feel less apathetic about the climate crisis, and less isolated in their concerns.
New Right Livelihood Laureates are awarded in the field of climate action, and receive a tremendous amount of media interest.
A powerful action-oriented focus on climate rights is developed and introduced at the Global Campus of Human Rights. The programme is taught to hundreds of Master students every year.
